11 Fun Tours You Can Take In The Fort Myers Area
In the Fort Myers area there are lots of different kinds of tours you can partake in. You can go on an adventure or you can learn information. No matter what kind of tour you choose to take, you definitely will have fun while doing it. Here are some suggestions of fun tours you can take in the Fort Myers area.
Segway tours of Sanibel Island – If you have never been on a segway tour, you should try one. Matt an I have been on two. One in Boston and one in Rhode Island. Both tours we had a blast. They are super easy to drive and a great way to learn about your surroundings. Although we haven’t been on a segway tour of Sanibel Island yet, it is on our to do list. Billy’s Bike Shop on Sanibel Island offers segway tours of the island and has really good tripadvisor reviews. Their segway tours are available Monday – Friday and are a great way to explore the island, and learn about the history of Sanibel Island.
Dolphin tours – After doing some research about companies that give dolphin tours I came across Mid Island Water Sports. They offer these tours by waverunners. The tours last about an hour and are the perfect way to explore the island form the water. They usually come across dolphin pods and even a manatee. Make sure you call at least a day ahead to book your tour. This tour should be at the top of your things to do list while on vacation. It’s fun for you and the whole family.
Everglade tours – Captain Bob’s Excellent Adventure offers everglade tours on an airboat. The tours start at 8:30 and ends at 1:30. Your tour takes place in the Western Everglades on a lake full of birds and alligators. Before the tour is over you will get a chance to participate in a hands on reptile experience that involves alligators and snakes! This tour is thrilling for all ages.
Factory tour – When I think of Florida a few things come to mind, sunshine, nice weather, Disney and oranges. Sun Harvest Citrus is an orange lovers heaven. They have factory tours so you can see how oranges are separated and packed. They have a variety of freshly squeezed juice and citrus samples to try too. The gift shop has all kinds of Florida themed gifts. If you want to ship oranges home they can do that from there store too. When Matt an I went there we tried the soft serve ice cream. I had the orange, vanilla swirl and he had the chocolate, key lime swirl, they were both very good. They even have coupons on their website for a BOGO cone. Click here and print it out before you go.
Distillery tour – The Wicked Dolphin Rum Distillery offers free tours that last about an hour. They will take you through all the steps that they use to make Wicked Dolphin Rum and show you how they come up with the different flavors and how they bottle their award winning rum. The tour ends on the tasting room where you are able to have a few tastes, but only if you are 21 or older. Reservations are recommended.

Walking tour – True Tours specializes in walking tours of the historic river district in Fort Myers and Matlacha Island. They won the 2015 TripAvisor Certificate of Excellence and was named by USA Today, one of the top ten tours on Lee County. They offer a variety of themed tours so you can pick the one that will best fit you and your family, check them out here . They also offer group tours. Paddleboard – Try out a paddleboard tour, they are fun and if you like being on the water this is the tour for you. The Fort Myers area offers several different paddle board tours. Here’s a company that has great reviews from TripAdvisor, Clearly Connected Nature Tours. Common sightings on their tours are dolphins, rays, manatess and rare birds.
Historical tours – If you are looking to learn about the areas history head over to the Edison Ford Winter Estates. Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, the original snowbirds would travel to Fort Myers every winter to escape the cold. This is a unique opportunity to see first hand where these historic stayed. The Edison Ford Winter Estates also had several events through out the year. Going on now through January 3rd is their annual Holiday Nights.
Shelling – A trip to the Fort Myers area would not be complete without a shelling adventure. People come from all over the world to visit Fort Myers, Sanibel and Captiva Island just for the shelling. Unique tour – Here’s a tour you don’t hear about everyday…It’s an aerial tour in a 1940 Waco UPF-5 plane. Museum tour – The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum is the only museum in the United States that features shells and the mollusks that make them. Spend the say touring this museum learning about the different types of shells you’ll find in the Fort Myers area and the entire counrty. There are over 3 different exhibits to explore and daily live tank demonstrations.
